Aggie softball loses heartbreaker in 7th, 3-2

The Texas A&M softball team was one strike away from a mighty big upset of the No. 1 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils but at the same time, ASU found themselves one hit away from pulling it out. They got the hit and Texas A&M lost a golden opportunity last night in Tempe as Kaylenn Castillo’s bases-loaded single past Aggie shortstop Brittany Walker turned a 2-1 Aggie lead to a 3-2 Arizona State win but it didn’t come without controversy.

Aggie players and Coach Jo Evans tried to protest that ASU baserunner Katelynn Boyd had interfered with Walker’s attempt to field the ball but replays seemed to show that Boyd made no contact with the ball nor the Walker. ASU scored two runs easily and take a one-game to none lead in the best of three series with Game 2 tonight at 8 pm.

The Aggies got only two hits in the game off ASU pitcher Dallas Escobedo, but they were both big ones as Amber Garza homered in the fifth ti tie the game at 1-1, then pitcher Mel Dumezich got a solo home run in the seventh to give A&M a 2-1 lead.

But in the bottom of the seventh and two outs, Dumezich issued her second straight walk and then hit a batter to load the bases. Castillo fell behind 2-2 before her grounder scored the two winning runs.
