News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
The No. 11 Texas A&M softball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 1 Texas Tech, 3-2, Saturday night at Davis Diamond.
Texas Tech (4-0) opened the game with back-to-back home runs before Aggie starter Sydney Lessentine settled in and induced a ground out, foul out and strikeout to limit further damage. Texas A&M (3-1) answered in the bottom of the first as Kennedy Powell led off with a single, followed by Micaela Wark’s two-run homer off the video board to knot the game at 2-2.
The Aggie defense faced pressure in the middle innings. Sophomore Frankie Vrazel raced to the wall for a leaping grab, and Gold Glove winner Tallen Edwards laid out to her right for a diving catch to end a Red Raider threat as the game remained tied through four innings.
Texas Tech broke the tie with an RBI double in the top of the fifth after capitalizing on a pair of Aggie miscues to take a 3-2 lead. Vrazel singled to third base in the bottom half, but a fielder’s choice and fly out ended the inning. The teams traded scoreless frames the rest of the way as the Aggies dropped their first game of the season.
Lessentine pitched 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Kate Munnerlyn took the loss after throwing 1.2 innings and surrendering one run on one hit with two strikeouts. Sidne Petters held Texas Tech scoreless over 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.
