Aggie Soccer Opens Home Slate Saturday

News release from Texas A&M Athletics: 

The Texas A&M soccer team opens its home slate Saturday when the Aggies host the Sam Houston Bearkats in an 8 p.m. match at Ellis Field.

There is anticipation of a lively crowd with the contest occurring during the annual Aggieland Friendship Cup youth tournament and Texas A&M’s Howdy Week. Ellis Field has been site of five of the top 20 highest-attended regular season NCAA women’s soccer matches, including four of the top 13.

Trinity Buchanan leads Texas A&M (1-2) with three goals through three matches. Freshmen Finley Lacher and Ireland Chuchill have added one apiece.

The new-look Aggies have had nine freshmen play in each of the first two matches. The 10 freshmen have totaled 1,320 of the 2,970 minutes (44.4%) on the pitch. Goalkeeper Makenna August and defender Ava Sexton have played all 270 minutes.

The game will be streamed on SEC Network +. Jack Benjamin makes his debut handling play-by-play duties with Jeff Given returning to provide color.

The Aggies are 5-0 against Sam Houston with all the matches coming at Ellis Field. Texas A&M has outscored the Bearkats 34-0 in the five matches. The last time the teams played, the Maroon & White delivered a 6-0 pounding in 2022. The Aggies had six different players score, including four in the first half. The Aggies outshot the Bearkats 33-7, including 18-0 in the first half.

Sam Houston is 0-0-2 on the season with draws against Oklahoma State (1-1) and Lamar (0-0). The Bearkats have pulled two matches out of the jaws of defeat despite getting outshot 40-13.
