Texas A&M came out on the short end of a 4.5-0.5 result against the Ole Miss Rebels in Saturday’s quarterfinal match at the SEC Men’s Golf Championship.
The loss came on the heels of another tremendous effort by the Aggies in stroke play on the par-70, 7,005-yard Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. Texas A&M is the only team to advance to the eight-team match play bracket all nine years the SEC has embraced the format.
Ole Miss jumped out to an early lead with Tom Fischer winning the first three holes against Jaime Montojo and holding off a late charge to win 3&2.
The Aggies’ Kris Kuvaas held his own against Daniel Tolf. After falling behind 3Up after six holes, Kuvaas claimed four of the next six to nose ahead 1UP. Kuvaas remained 1UP, but Tolf claimed the final hole and players halved the match.
Texas A&M’s Aaron Pounds remained in striking distance of Cameron Tankersley through the first 11 holes, but the Ole Miss golfer claimed three consecutive holes and after the pair halved the 15th, Tankersley won 4&3.
Ole Miss clinched the victory with Collins Trolio toppling Shiv Parmar 2&1 Trolio was 3UP after six holes and fought off a late charge by the Aggie.
The Rebels’ Cohen Trolio was 2UP against Wheaton Ennis in the final match when Ole Miss clinched the quarterfinal win.
