COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M men’s basketball program announced Friday the signing of J.C. Hampton, a transfer guard from Lipscomb.
“We’re excited to add J.C. to our program,” Texas A&M head coach Billy Kennedy said. “He brings experience and versatility on the perimeter as well as leadership in the lockerroom. In addition to being outstanding at the free throw line, he gives us another solid scorer who has the ability to make plays for himself and his teammates.”
During his career at Lipscomb, the 6-foot guard played in 96 games and made 92 starts while averaging 29.9 minutes per contest. He contributed 12.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per outing for the Bison while totaling 275 assists and 96 steals in three plus seasons. An impressive free throw shooter, Hampton has converted 79.3 percent of his chances from the charity stripe during his career while hitting at a 34.5 percent clip from 3-point range.
As a junior this past season, Hampton earned second-team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors after ranking ninth in the conference with a team-leading scoring average of 15.9 points per game. For the year, Hampton shot 40.1 percent from the floor, 35.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 83.1 percent from the free throw line, a figure that placed him third in the league. He also dished out 90 assists and collected 38 steals.
During his sophomore campaign, Hampton struggled with injuries but managed to dish out 89 assists against just 43 turnovers to rank ninth in the Atlantic Sun in assist-to-turnover ratio.
Hampton’s first full campaign on the hardwood came in 2013-14 when he made an immediate impact on the Bison program. During the season he was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team and twice selected as the league’s Newcomer of the Week en route to ranking second on Lipscomb with a 14.5 point-per-game average and dishing out a team-leading 88 assists. Additionally, he ranked sixth in the nation among freshmen with 82 three-pointers made.
Hampton is a native of Gainesville, Ga., where he attended East Hall High School and led the Vikings to the championship of the 2012 Alaska Airlines Classic High School National Basketball tournament, earning MVP honors along the way.
