Aggie Basketball Stumbles Against SMU in Overtime, 93-80

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

The Texas A&M men’s basketball team suffered an overtime defeat to the SMU Mustangs, 93-80, in Sunday’s Hoop Hype XL action from College Park Center.

The Aggies (7-3) came out on the losing end despite a season-best performance from Marcus Hill. He tallied 25 points, including 16 in the second half. He added seven rebounds and two assists.

Rashaun Agee registered his third consecutive double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Mackenzie Mgbako continued to work into midseason form, tacking on 13 points, including 11 in the second half, and seven rebounds.

The Maroon & White erased a 12-point deficit in the final 6:25 of regulation to send the game to overtime. Trailing 69-57, a pair of Pop Isaacs 3-pointers bookended a 20-4 run. With Rylan Griffen and Mgbako adding trifectas in the surge, Texas A&M grabbed a 77-73 cushion with 1:17 remaining. Ol’ Sarge’s charges were unable to close out the victory as the Mustangs (8-2) sank two from the charity stripe and got a layup from Jaron Pierre Jr. to send the game to extra time.

The Aggies pounced on the Mustangs early to push ahead, 10-2, at the 16:52 mark in the first half. SMU answered with a 10-0 run, staking claim to a 12-10 lead with 14:20 on the clock. Texas A&M tied the contest on three occasions, but SMU closed out the half on a 19-6 run over a 7:19 span, heading into the locker room up 41-27. Nine points by Hill and seven boards by Agee paced the Aggies in the opening act.

Texas A&M shaved the deficit to single digits on two occasions, but the big run which got the Aggies back in the fray was a 9-0 surge highlighted by a pair of Federiko Federiko dunks. After the A&M rally, SMU led 53-51 with 11:32 remaining in the game. The Mustangs inflated their cushion back to a dozen over the next five minutes to set up A&M’s valiant comeback.

The Aggies were outscored 16-3 in the overtime period, going 0-of-11 from the field.
