Aggie baseball beats SFA, 5-2

Junior first baseman Jacob House went 3-for-4 with three runs and three  RBI on Tuesday night, including a go-ahead, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning as No. 6 Texas A&M rallied to beat Stephen F. Austin 7-5 at Olsen Field.

The come-from-behind victory improved the Aggies’ overall mark this season to 16-5 while it snapped the Lumberjacks’ 11-game winning streak and dropped their record to 16-5.

Early in the contest, Texas A&M built momentum by plating a pair of runs during the home half of the second inning. Following a leadoff single by junior third baseman Matt Juengel, House collected his first big hit of the night and put the initial impression on the scoreboard by tripling to right center to drive in Juengel. Freshman Troy Stein plated House in the next at bat and put the Aggies up 2-0 with a run-scoring ground out.

Stein helped extend the home lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI safety squeeze which was followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of senior shortstop Kenny Jackson, making the score 4-0 A&M.

The Jacks countered with their first run of the contest in the top of the fifth as second baseman Michael Haynes notch a two-out, run-scoring single up the middle.

SFA’s Darren Crabtree doubled to begin the sixth inning off Aggie starter Brandon Parrent and came around to score later in the frame on an A&M error, cutting the lead to 4-2.

Parrent, who exited the ballgame after the leadoff double, scattered four hits in five innings of work. The Flower Mound, Texas, native yielded only one earned run and a walk while striking out four in his first start of the year.

Jacks left fielder Bryson Myles, who was 3-for-5 on the night, deadlocked the score at 4-4 in the top of the seventh when he connected on his third home run of the spring off A&M reliever Kyle Martin

The SFA rally reached its peak in the eighth when for the third consecutive inning the Jacks were able to get the leadoff man aboard and scored the runner to take a 5-4 lead on a RBI single by Haynes.

Trailing for the first time in the contest, the Aggies found themselves in the position of needing to rally as they came to bat in the home half of the eighth. Following two quick outs, sophomore right fielder Tyler Naquin walked and was joined on base in the next at bat by Juengel who singled up the middle to extend the inning.

House, whose seventh-inning, two-run double was a pivotal point in Sunday’s win over Oklahoma, stepped to the plate in another clutch situation. The Mansfield, Texas, native came up big for the Aggies again as he doubled to right center on a 1-2 count to drive in both runners.

After being hung up between second and third on the play, House was awarded third base following an interference call against SFA. The break turned out to be very fortuitous for the Aggies as he was able to come home on a wild pitch during the next at bat, scoring an important insurance run.

Senior Joaquin Hinojosa slammed the door on the Jacks in the ninth inning as he retired the side in order to collect his third save of the season.

Texas A&M baseball jumps back into Big 12 Conference play this weekend when it entertains Kansas in a three-game series at Olsen Field.
