Accused Montgomery County Shooter Says She’s No Monster

CONROE, Texas (AP) _ A Texas woman accused of kidnapping a newborn boy after fatally shooting his mother is saying she is not “some sort of monster” and people should not judge her until they know the facts.

Verna McClain remains jailed without bond after being charged with fatally shooting 28-year-old Kala Golden-Schuchardt on April 17 in the parking lot of a suburban Houston pediatric clinic and snatching her 3-day-old son. The infant was later found safe.

Houston television station KHOU reports that in jailhouse visit in Conroe it witnessed between McClain and her fiance, she said, “Mentally, I’m borderline.”

Investigators say the 30-year-old McClain had suffered a miscarriage and was reportedly desperate to find a child.

McClain faces a capital murder charge, which could carry a death sentence.
