Abortion Bills Proceed in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A Texas Senate panel approved creating new “Choose Life” license plates.

Anti-abortion groups got a lift by the Senate panel’s vote on the license plate bill, which now goes to the full Senate.

The Texas House version of the “Choose Life” license plate was heard in a transportation subcommittee two weeks ago — but has yet to get a vote.

Supporters say 19 other states that have such plates have raised more than $10 million for organizations that counsel and support women choosing adoption.

Opponents argue its just another wedge in the abortion debate.

Meanwhile, a Texas House committee has been hearing testimony on a bill that would require women seeking abortions to first have an ultrasound and be shown the results.

Kyleen Wright with the Texans for Life Coalition calls the ultrasound bill the “top priority” for anti-abortion groups.

The ultrasound bill has stalled in the Senate.
