A Brazos County district court jury takes four hours to convict a Huntsville man guilty of sexual abuse of a 12 year old girl.

The jury convicted 38 year old Jarvis Martin of two felonies and sentenced him to 30 years for aggravated sexual assault of a child and 14 years for indecency with a child by sexual contact. A spokeswoman in the district attorney’s office told WTAW News that Martin was originally charged with continuous sexual abuse.

Then the trial judge granted the prosecution’s motion to “stack” the sentences, ordering the two sentences to be served consecutively for a total punishment of 44 years.

The DA spokeswoman told WTAW News that multiple child sex abuse offenses is one of the legal situations where prosecutors can request stacking sentences.

Martin has been in jail since March 15, 2022, the day after the victim’s mother caught him with her daughter.

Online court records also shows Martin owes $59,042.10, which does not involve fines associated with this case.

News release from the Brazos County district attorney’s office:

Jarvis Martin, 38, was sentenced to a total of 44 years in prison on Thursday, October 9 by 85th District Court Judge Kyle Hawthorne.

A Brazos County jury convicted Martin of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child and Indecency with a Child by Contact on Thursday, October 2. The next day, the jury assessed punishment at 30 years and 14 years, respectively. Following a sentencing hearing on October 9, the Court ordered that the two sentences would be served consecutively.

Martin was arrested on March 15, 2022 and charged with sexually abusing a 12 year old female child in his home. The College Station Police Department was called to the home the previous day, March 14, 2022, after the child’s mother caught Martin engaging in sexual contact with the child.

The victim was interviewed at Scotty’s House that day, as well as seen by forensic nurses who collected evidence. That evidence later showed that DNA consistent with Martin was found on the child’s body. During the investigation, the child disclosed that Martin had abused her on many occasions and that the March 14 incident was not the first time.

During the trial, jurors heard from the child, her mother and several expert witnesses who testified about the process of child abuse disclosure and he evidence collection and DNA testing process. They also heard from the first officer on the scene and the detective who investigated the case.

Martin was found guilty after four hours of deliberations.

Statement from assistant district attorney’s Kara Comte and Abigail Goodman: “We are thankful that the victim in this case was able to speak out and receive long awaited justice. Because of her strength, the defendant will hopefully never hurt another child again.”
