A&M Softball Sweeps Ole Miss on Senior Day

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 25 Texas A&M softball team (38-17, 12-12 SEC) won an 8-5 victory over Ole Miss (30-24, 6-18 SEC) on Sunday, completing the second series sweep of the season on Senior Day.

Senior Rachel Fox earned her 22nd victory on the season, picking up her 22ndcomplete game in her career finale at the Aggie Softball Complex.

A grand slam in the top of the second inning gave the Rebels their first lead of the weekend, jumping 4-0 early in the afternoon.

Leading off for the Aggies in the second, sophomore Celena Massey took her base after being hit by a pitch. Freshman Kristen Cuyos stepped up to the dish and dropped a bomb over the left field wall to cut the Ole Miss lead to two.

Trailing 4-2, freshman Tori Vidales sent a laser up the middle for a single and sophomore April Ryan crushed her second home run in as many days, evening the game at four all.

After Fox forced the Rebels to leave two runners stranded in the top of the fourth, Cuyos drew her first walk of the day to put herself on base. Senior Brittany Cloptonsent a single up the middle to give the Aggies two runners on with two gone. A long double to the center field wall from Vidales set both runners in motion, with both scoring and giving A&M its first lead of the game at 6-4.

Neither team managed to scratch any across in the fifth inning. Ole Miss put runners on the corners in the home half of the sixth but Fox and the defense shut down the Rebel attack on a ground out to end the inning.

Clopton stepped up with two outs on the board to drop a single in centerfield, reaching base in what would be her final regular season at-bat at the Aggie Softball Complex. Vidales followed with her 18th home run of the season, good enough to move her into a tie for 15th in the country and fourth in the single season home run records.

With the lead out to four, the Rebels opened the seventh inning with a solo home run, mimicking Saturday’s final inning, before Fox and the Aggie defense clamped down to secure the second SEC series sweep of 2015 for A&M.

After the three victories this weekend, the Aggies finished .500 in league play for the first time since joining the SEC in 2012-13. A&M will ride a four-game win streak headed into the SEC Tournament this week.

Let’s Hear a Hullabaloo
…for a job well done. This Sunday, the Aggie Softball program honored four seniors who played their last regular season game at the Aggie Softball Complex:Lauren Ainsley, Brittany Clopton, Rachel Fox and Sara Mireles. Gig ‘em, Seniors!

Coach Evans on the 2015 senior class:
“It’s a very unselfish group. They continue to continue to contribute to our program in so many ways. Since this class isn’t all everyday starters, a lot of people don’t understand what they bring to our team but they’re all such great leaders. They always put the team first and everything they do is selfless, all four of them. Today it was great to see Rachel and Brittany have great days on senior day. It’s fun for me to coach a group that is selfless and cares about the program like they go. They want to leave a legacy here and they take it very seriously.”
