The calendar is being a friend to the taxpayer as the primary deadline for property tax payments arrives. January 31 is the last day for taxpayers to pay their property taxes with no penalty or interest for late payment. However, according to Brazos County Tax Assessor/Collector Kristeen Roe, taxpayers will be given an additional two days to get their payments in this year.
The Texas Property Tax Code provides for such an extension if the deadline falls on a holiday or weekend. The last day of January comes on a Saturday, which will extend the date for payment to Monday February 2. Payments postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service, or delivered to the Brazos County Tax Office on that Monday will be considered as January payments.
For those who want to drop their payment at the tax office, there is a secure drop box next to the property tax door along William J Bryan Parkway. All payments drop into a safe which is cleared at the end of each business day. Payments dropped after 5:00 PM are considered as next day payments, so taxpayers are encouraged to drop that payment over the long weekend to avoid the rush and the stress of trying to make that last minute run to the tax office on Monday.
The Brazos County Tax Office accepts payment online through their website at www.brazostax.org. Taxpayers must search the account they want to pay, and start the process from there. The website transfers the account information to the vendor that processes the payment. This verifies that the payment is provided and applied to the correct account. Payments made by credit card are assessed a convenience fee of approximately 2.4%. Electronic check payments are also available through the same process. The fee for payment by Echeck is only $1.00.
Taxpayers can also make credit card payment by telephone by calling 844-550-8208. The Property ID number of the account to be paid, the amount to be paid, and a valid telephone number must be provided to use this service. Without this information, the payment cannot be credited to the correct account, or refunded to the payor.
The February 2 deadline does not apply to those taxpayers that took advantage of the split-payment option in November. For disabled residents or over-65 residents that qualify for quarterly payments, the first quarter payment is due by February 2. For additional information taxpayers are encouraged to contact the Brazos County Tax Office at 979-361-4470.
