Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp has announced the implosion of the west side of Kyle Field will take place Sun., Dec. 21 in the early morning hours. The first deck is currently being removed via heavy machinery similar to the first deck removal of the east side following the 2013 football season.
Several roads will be closed during the Dec. 21 implosion, including Joe Routt Blvd., Wellborn Rd. and a portion of Houston St. beginning at 5 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21. These roads are expected to be open by 12 p.m. The Texas A&M Student Recreation Center will operate under normal business hours. The West Campus Garage, Blue Bell Park and Lot 39 will be closed to the public.
Public viewing of the implosion will be available from the Reed Area lawn and parking lots. Public parking is available in lots 74, 97 and 65. Lot 61 (gameday Lot H) and Lot 104 will be available for pedestrian access only.
A map outlining closures and public viewing areas is available at: http://news.tamus.edu/?p=9629.
A live web stream of the event is being planned. Credentialed media will have access to the roof of the West Campus Garage, along with additional footage from within the exclusion zone to be provided post-event. Additional information for the media is forthcoming.
Kyle Field officially became a construction zone following the conclusion of the LSU game. The Kyle Field project has been recognized as the largest stadium redevelopment in the history of college football. Scheduled for completion in time for the 2015 season, the new west side of the stadium will feature new suites and premium areas for fans, the majestic Hall of Champions and state-of-the-art facilities for television broadcast media. Final seating capacity for the stadium will be 102,512.
The Texas A&M University System, in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration, provides notice of the legal guidelines relevant to the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in or around the campus of Texas A&M.
The FAA regulates the safe operation of all UAS aircraft flights. Any operators who operate carelessly or recklessly can be subject to civil penalties, including fines up to $10,000. This is a particular concern in a restricted construction site, such as Kyle Field, located near an airport.
The A&M System appreciates the benefits of the UAS technology; however, the safety of the public and workers within the Kyle Field Redevelopment zone are its primary concern. Texas A&M and the FAA strongly discourage UAS flights in this restricted construction area.
Detailed information on the use of UAS is available on the FAA website at: http://www.faa.gov/news/fact_sheets/news_story.cfm?newsId=14153 and http://www.faa.gov/news/updates/?newsId=76381.
