BIRMINGHAM – A pair of Texas A&M athletes were honored as SEC Athletes of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday following the performances the Aggies produced during the Texas Relays this past weekend.
Shelbi Vaughan, named the National Athlete of the Week on Monday, earned the SEC Field Athlete of the Week for her winning effort in the discus with a school record of 198 feet, 10 inches that topped the field by 24 feet. Vaughan defended her Texas Relays title and came up just four inches short of the meet record of 199-2 set in 2006.
Aaliyah Brown was selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week after she placed third in the Texas Relays 100 meters with a wind-aided time of 11.20 seconds. During the prelims Brown ran a best of 11.34 that places her No. 8 on the Aggie all-time list. Both the 11.20w and 11.34 are the fastest collegiate times by a freshman this season. The 11.34 also ranks eighth in the world and third among Americans in 2014.
This coming weekend the No. 1 A&M women and No. 3 Aggie men travel to California for the 30th annual Stanford Invitational, which features 3,300 athletes among 114 schools in college and high school divisions competing at Cobb Track and Angell Field this Friday and Saturday.
