PHOENIX (AP) _ Patty Mills and Kawhi Leonard scored 16 apiece to lead six San
Antonio players in double figures and the Spurs ended their nine-game road trip
Sunday night with a 97-87 victory over the Phoenix Suns.
The Spurs, with Tony Parker out with a sore right triceps, finished their
annual long journey, caused by a rodeo back home, at 7-2 to boost their NBA-best
record to 45-13.
Tiago Splitter scored nine of his 14 in San Antonio’s 35-point second quarter.
Marcin Gortat scored 21 for Phoenix, 16 in the first half. Luis Scola added 15.
Goran Dragic had 10 points and 11 assists.
San Antonio beat the Suns for the sixth straight time and ninth time in their
last 10 meetings.
LAKERS-MAVERICKS
Bryant outscores Nowitzki as Lakers top Mavs
DALLAS (AP) _ Kobe Bryant had 38 points to win a scoring duel with Dirk
Nowitzki, and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Dallas Mavericks 103-99 Sunday in
a matchup of teams fighting to get in the playoff race.
With chants of MVP from a strong contingent of Lakers fans, Bryant scored 14 in
the fourth, including seven in the final 3 minutes to hold off a spirited Dallas
effort.
Nowitzki finished with 30 points and 13 rebounds for the Mavericks, who had a
chance to pull virtually even with the Lakers for ninth place in the Western
Conference. Houston is in eighth, with a cushion of several games.
CUBAN-BRYANT COMMENTS
Cuban: Amnesty comment on Bryant was innocent
DALLAS (AP) _ Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says he doesn’t expect to hear from
the league over his suggestion that the Los Angeles Lakers could reduce their
salary cap tax by dumping Kobe Bryant through the amnesty clause.
Cuban said before Sunday’s game against the Lakers that he made it clear during
a radio interview Friday that he was speaking hypothetically, and he was just
trying to use an example to explain new restrictions in the labor agreement.
The Lakers called the remark inappropriate but didn’t plan to pursue a
complaint.
Cuban has cited the labor deal as a key reason for not bringing back key pieces
of Dallas’ 2011 championship team. He said the labor contract is difficult to
explain and “it’s not like we’re getting any help from the league.”
