Texas Lawmaker Focuses on Tanning Teens

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A legislator who wants to restrict access to tanning beds for Texas teenagers is comparing his bill to the fight against Big Tobacco.

Republican Rep. Burt Solomons of Carrollton today testified before a House panel in Austin that tanning beds pose the same cancer risks as cigarettes. But Solomons says the restrictions aren’t the same.

Teens under 18 can’t buy cigarettes, but they can use tanning beds with parental permission.

The Solomons bill would require anyone under 18 to get a doctor’s note to use a tanning bed. A parent would have to accompany them to the salon. Current law requires an accompanying parent for teens under 16.

A tanning company representative says parents should decide what’s right for their children.
