BIG LAKE, Texas (AP) _ A 17-hour standoff between law officers and a man suspected of fatally shooting a West Texas deputy has ended with the alleged gunman’s capture.
Senior Trooper Phillip “Sparky” Dean of the Texas Department of Public Safety says a tactical squad surrounded a house in Big Lake. He says 42-year-old Marcus Madison emerged about 11:30 a.m. Thursday with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face.
Reagan County Sheriff Jeff Garner said the man had been barricaded in the house since about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday after Deputy Josh Mitchell was killed.
The sheriff told the San Angelo Standard-Times that Mitchell had gone to the house to talk with Madison about a complaint. Garner declined to elaborate.
Big Lake is about 63 miles southwest of San Angelo.
