After trailing most of the night, the final five boxes pushed Kyle Kacal across the finish line by 147 votes in the Republican runoff for State House District 12.
Kacal, of College Station, lost in four out of the five counties in District 12, but a 2-1 final margin in Brazos County (2,215 to 1,131) was enough for the win over Tucker Anderson of Calvert.
With 93 out of 98 boxes reporting, Anderson maintained the lead. Those boxes, however, were from Brazos County and Kacal pulled ahead when the final votes were counted.
Kacal, who owns Tonkaway Ranch, defeated Anderson 4,230-4,083, or 50.9 percent to 49.1 percent.

The other high-profile local race was for Brazos County district attorney.
Jarvis Parsons, who took 48 percent of the vote in the primary, extended a six percentage-point early voting lead into a 10-point margin of victory.
The current assistant district attorney defeated former prosecutor David Hilburn 5,721 to 4,619, or 55 percent to 45 percent.
Parsons is unopposed in the November general election, meaning he will be the next Brazos County district attorney. Parsons will replace longtime DA Bill Turner, who is retiring after almost 30 years in office.
