CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) _ Lawmakers who toured a state school where workers accused of staging fights involving mentally and developmentally disabled people say most of the state system’s employees want what’s best for the residents.
The FBI is investigating allegations of civil rights violations at the Corpus Christi State School, where six workers are accused of organizing a “fight club” where residents of the facility fought each other for the staff’s entertainment. Officials have said the resident fights were recorded on a cell phone camera that was found at a clothing store and turned over to police.
Arrest warrants were issued for six current or former employees. Four have been taken into custody.
Rep. Drew Darby, R-San Angelo, and Addie Horn, commissioner for the Department of Aging and Disability Services, which has oversight of 13 state schools, were among officials on the tour.
