Marquis Alexander of Houston always planned on going to Texas A&M University, joining the Corps of Cadets, and enlisting in the military.
At 22 years-old, he has done all three, but not in that order. Alexander enlisted in the Marine Corps out of high school. He spent a year and a half on active duty and then reverted from active duty status to come to A&M. He is serving the remainder of his enlistment commitment in the Marine Corps Reserves.
Alexander said he always knew he wanted to come to A&M. In fact, it was the only school he applied to.
He is not the first veteran to join the Corps of Cadets, but he is the first to be selected as corps commander. He is also the first African-American to be chosen for the top leadership role.
Alexander will assume his new duty on May 5th.
