Lawyers hired by the Bryan and College Station school districts have or will be contacted to address a legal opinion announced this week by Attorney General Greg Abbott.
The ruling involves the practice of school districts allowing payroll deductions directly to political action committees that in turn gives those dollars to candidates running for elective office.
Abbott ruled school districts have no authority to do that. Republican lawmakers called on school districts to stop processing payroll deductions that support political groups. One state representative vowed to file a lawsuit if districts don’t stop. Both the Bryan and College Station districts allows payroll deductions.
Administrators said they have or will be asking their lawyers whether to continue the practice.
