ALAMO, Texas (AP) _ An Austin man faces charges alleging he planned an acid attack that left a south Texas woman with serious chemical burns.
Eugenio Martinez, 37, was charged Wednesday with aggravated assault and tampering with evidence in the case of elementary teacher Lorena de la Cruz.
Two men rear-ended De la Cruz’s car and sprayed her face with sulfuric acid last month. Police connected Martinez to the crime through phone conversations he had with an inmate at the Willacy County Detention Center, The McAllen Monitor reported Thursday. Police believe Martinez hired the men who attacked De la Cruz. It was not immediately clear who was representing Martinez.
Martinez remained jailed Thursday.
