AWOL Muslim Soldier Defiant in 1st Court Appearance

WACO, Texas (AP) _ An AWOL soldier accused of plotting an attack at Fort Hood was defiant during his first court appearance, yelling out the name of the man accused of killing 13 people at the same Texas Army base in 2009.

Federal prosecutors charged 21-year-old Pfc. Naser Abdo (AB’-doh) with possessing an illegal firearm during his court hearing on Friday.

As Abdo left the courtroom, he yelled “Nidal Hasan Fort Hood 2009.” Hasan is charged with killing 13 people in the worst mass shooting ever on a U.S. military installation.

Abdo was arrested on Wednesday. Authorities say weapons and bomb-making materials were stashed in a motel room where Abdo was staying near the main gate of Fort Hood.
