Kolb, Haynesworth and Bush on the move
UNDATED (AP) _ The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a deal to
send quarterback Kevin Kolb (kahb) to Arizona. The Eagles get
cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round draft
pick from the Cardinals.
Kolb began last season as the heir-apparent to Donovan McNabb in
Philadelphia, but he went down with a concussion in the opener and
lost his job to Michael Vick. The Cardinals have been looking for
an answer at quarterback since Kurt Warner retired following the
2009 season
A person familiar with the deal tells the AP that Albert
Haynesworth’s tumultuous stay in Washington is over. Two years
after signing the two-time All-Pro defensive lineman to a
seven-year, $100 million free-agent contract, the Redskins are
trading Haynesworth to the New England Patriots.
The Skins get a 2013 fifth-round draft pick from the Patriots in
return.
Haynesworth constantly feuded with first-year Redskins coach
Mike Shanahan last season and was suspended for the final four
games.
Also, New Orleans is shipping Reggie Bush to Miami. That deal
was consummated after the Dolphins renegotiated Bush’s contract.
It’s a two-year deal for $10 million.
Bush was due about $11.8 million in what would have been the
final season of the six-year, $62 million rookie contract he signed
after the Saints made him the second overall pick of the 2006
draft.
Bush missed eight games last season and was a role player in the
other eight. He gained 150 yards on 36 carries and caught 34 passes
for 208 yards.

_ The Chicago Bears have traded tight end Greg Olsen to the
Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed 2012 draft pick.
_ The Houston Texans have agreed to terms with cornerback
Johnathan Joseph, according to a person with knowledge of the deal.
He intercepted nine passes the last two seasons with Cincinnati.
_ Five-time Pro Bowl kicker David Akers has agreed to a
three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, leaving the
Philadelphia Eagles after 12 seasons.
— The Eagles have reached agreement on a five-year, $28 million
contract with Jason Babin (BA’-bihn). The Pro Bowl defensive end
played for Philadelphia in 2009 before signing with the Titans in
free agency. He had a career-best 12.5 sacks with Tennessee while
earning his first trip to Hawaii.
— The Tennessee Titans have released Vince Young, finally
cutting ties with the quarterback they made the No. 3 pick overall
in the 2006 draft.
— Quarterback Jake Delhomme (del-OHM’) has officially been
released by the Browns after just one season with Cleveland.
— The San Francisco 49ers cut ties with cornerback Nate
Clements. The 10-year veteran started every game for the team
during last season’s disappointing 6-10 campaign.
— The starting left guard for the Super Bowl champion Packers
says he is done in Green Bay. Daryn Colledge tweets that after
talks with the Arizona Cardinals it seems his time with the Packers
has come to an end.
— The Bears have agreed to a five-year contract with punter
Adam Podlesh that makes him one of the highest-paid players at his
position.

Giants welcome Beltran with a victory
UNDATED (AP) _ The defending World Series champion San Francisco
Giants got six shutout innings from ace Tim Lincecum
(LINZ’-ih-kuhm) and a home run from Pablo Sandoval in their 4-1 win
over Philadelphia in Carlos Beltran’s first game with the Giants.
Beltran went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts while starting in right
field for the Giants, who acquired him in a trade with the Mets.
The Giants took two of three from the Phillies in the rematch of
last year’s NL Championship Series. This is the first time the
Phils have lost back-to-back games since June 4, a span of 45
games.
Also in the NL:
_ The New York Mets completed their first-ever four-game sweep
at Cincinnati with a 10-9 victory over the Reds. Lucas Duda
(DOO’-duh) and Jason Bay each drove in three runs with bases-loaded
doubles. Mets third baseman David Wright went 3 for 5 and is now 15
for 33 since coming off the disabled list on July 22.
_ Andrew McCutchen had three hits, including a double in the
fifth inning that gave Pittsburgh the lead and a two-run homer in
the ninth, and the Pirates beat the Atlanta Braves 5-2.
_ Ryan Braun had three hits, including a home run, to lead the
Milwaukee Brewers to a series sweep with a 4-2 win over the Chicago
Cubs. Shaun Marcum pitched six innings to win this third straight
and improve his record to 10-3. The Brewers have a game and a-half
lead over the Cardinals and Pirates in the NL Central.
_ Houston dumped St. Louis 5-3. Wandy Rodriguez pitched seven
innings and retired the last 13 batters he faced in evening his
record at 7-7.
_ Florida completed a three-game sweep of the Nationals with a
5-2 matinee victory in Washington. It’s the Marlins fifth straight
win and the Nats’ fifth consecutive loss. Mike Stanton homered for
the second consecutive game and five Marlins relievers held the
Nats to one run over 5 1/3 innings. Emilio Bonifacio
(boh-nih-FAH’-see-oh) ran his hitting streak to 26 games,
second-longest in Marlins history.
_ Jesus Guzman had two RBIs and rookie Luis Martinez drove in
the go-ahead run in the San Diego Padres’ 4-3 win over Arizona.
In the American League:
_ Toronto beat Baltimore 8-5. Edwin Encarnacion
(ehn-kar-nah-see-OHN’) and Eric Thames hit back-to-back home runs
to help Carlos Villanueva win for the first time in five starts.
_ Texas won a pitchers’ duel against Minnesota 4-1. Matt
Harrison worked into the eighth inning and outdueled the Twins’
Scott Baker.
_ Desmond Jennings hit his first career home run and later added
a two-run double in a seven-run seventh inning as Tampa Bay rallied
from five runs down to beat Oakland 10-8.
_ Mark Trumbo homered and drove in a career-high five runs to
lead the Los Angeles Angels over the Detroit Tigers 12-7. Trumbo
also tripled, doubled and scored three times in the rookie’s fourth
three-hit game.
_ At Fenway Park, Billy Butler hit a three-run homer and Luke
Hochevar (HOH’-chay-vur) pitched seven strong innings to lead the
Kansas City Royals to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox.
MLB-IRABU OBIT
Irabu found dead in Calif.
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Neighbors are remembering former New York
Yankees pitcher Hideki Irabu (hih-DEHK’-ee ih-RAH’-boo) as a quiet,
unassuming man who had apparently grown despondent recently because
of a split with his wife. The 42-year-old Irabu was found dead, an
apparent suicide in the wealthy suburb of Rancho Palos Verdes.
Irabu was billed as the Japanese version of Nolan Ryan when he
arrived in the United States in 1997. But after an impressive major
league debut with the Yankees that summer, he never came close to
fulfilling such lofty expectations.
Irabu finished 34-35 with a 5.15 ERA in three seasons with the
Yankees, two years in Montreal and a final season in the Texas
bullpen in 2002. He was a member of two Yankees teams that won the
World Series.
PGA-WOODS
Woods returns next week at Firestone
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ Tiger Woods returns to golf next week
at the Bridgestone Invitational, ending an 11-week break to heal
injuries to his left leg. The event will be played at Akron’s
Firestone Country Club where Woods has won seven times in his
career.
On his Twitter account, Woods says he’s “feeling fit and ready
to tee it up at Firestone next week. Excited to get back out
there!”
It marks the third-longest layoff of his career, only this time
Woods returns with as much uncertainty about his future as ever.
Along with questions about the strength of his left knee and
Achilles’, he embarks on this latest comeback with a new caddie.
This will be Woods’ first event since he fired longtime caddie
Steve Williams. The Golf Channel reported Thursday night that Bryon
Bell, a childhood friend and president of Tiger Woods Design, would
caddie for him at the Bridgestone Invitational.
Woods has plunged to No. 21 in the world _ his lowest ranking
since 1997.
LPGA-WOMEN’S BRITISH OPEN
Ladies major in Scotland
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) _ Meena Lee of South Korea overcame
wet conditions and shot a 7-under 65 for a two-stroke lead after
the first round of the Women’s British Open at Carnoustie
(kahr-NOOS’-tee).
Brittany Lincicome (LIHN’-sih-kohm) of the United States is
alone in second place at 4-under 67.
American Angela Stanford, South Korea’s Amy Yang, Germany’s
Caroline Masson and Sweden’s Sofie Gustafson are all three shots
behind the leader with 54 holes to play.
PGA-GREENBRIER CLASSIC
Immelman goes low in West Virginia
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. (AP) _ Trevor Immelman fashioned a
six-under-par 64 and has the first-round lead at the Greenbrier
Classic, the PGA Tour stop in West Virginia. Billy Mayfair is among
five golfers tied one shot back.
SENIOR PGA-US SENIOR OPEN
Browne leads by two
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) _ Olin Browne had two eagles down the stretch
and finished with a 7-under 64 for a two-stroke lead over Mark
O’Meara and Michael Allen after the opening round of the U.S.
Senior Open. Amateur Damon Green, better known as Zach Johnson’s
caddie on the PGA Tour, was at 67 with former U.S. Open champion
Steve Jones and Mark Wiebe (WEE’-bee).
COLLEGE BASKETBALL-OKLAHOMA
Sooners admit more mistakes
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) _ Oklahoma has asked the NCAA to place its
men’s basketball program on two more years of probation and vacate
all wins from the 2009-10 season for two major rules violations by
former assistant coach Oronde Taliaferro.
The Sooners also proposed taking away one scholarship, two
official visits and 10 in-person recruiting days during the
upcoming academic year as penalties for the violations committed
while the program was already on probation.
Taliaferro resigned last year after the investigation started.
COLLEGES-UNC
Tar Heels promote Withers to interim head coach…Heels will get
new AD
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) _ The North Carolina Tar Heels have
promoted defensive coordinator Everett Withers to interim head
coach after firing Butch Davis nine days before the start of
preseason practice.
Now the Heels are also looking for a new athletic director.
Dick Baddour says he plans to step down after 14 years as soon
as the school can hire a replacement. He has one year left on his
contract but wants to leave now so that his successor can name the
Tar Heels’ next football coach instead of inheriting a hire.
Chancellor Holden Thorp says Baddour will attend the school’s
hearing before the NCAA infractions committee in October, then
serve out the rest of his contract in another position.
SOCCER-U.S. COACH FIRED
Bradley out as U.S. coach
CHICAGO (AP) _ Bob Bradley has been fired as head coach of the
U.S. men’s national soccer team after five years.
The U.S. squad is coming off a poor showing in the Gold Cup,
including a stunning 2-1 loss to Panama and a 4-2 loss in the
championship game against Mexico.
Bradley was chosen as coach in January 2007 and went 43-25-12
overall. He helped the lead the team to the Round of 16 of the 2010
World Cup in South Africa.
SWIMMING-WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Good day in the pool for U.S. swimmers
SHANGHAI (AP) _ Ryan Lochte (LAHK’-tee) edged American teammate
Michael Phelps for gold in the 200-meter individual medley at the
world championships today in Shanghai. He set the first world
record since high-tech bodysuits were banned at the start of last
year.
And the U.S. quartet of Missy Franklin, Dagny Knutson, Katie
Hoff and Allison Schmitt took gold in the women’s 4×200-meter
freestyle relay.
