UT-Austin Report Blasts Ed Reform Suggestions

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ The University of Texas at Austin has issued its most staunch defense yet against controversial higher education proposals causing a stir on campuses statewide.

The dean of UT’s College of Liberal Arts on Thursday released a report blasting the so-called “Seven Breakthrough Solutions” that Gov. Rick Perry has broadly endorsed. The report warns against state leaders adopting “oversimplified, market-driven ideas” that treat students as customers.

The proposals were created by the right-leaning Texas Public Policy Foundation. The think tank questions the use of taxpayer dollars for academic research and calls for greater scrutiny of faculty productivity.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner responded to the report by saying that “resisting reform and accountability” is a recipe for stagnation.

The proposals have not been formally implemented or proposed on any Texas campus.
