State Representative Fred Brown of Bryan is leaving the Texas House of Representatives. The announcement was made after the House concluded the special session Wednesday afternoon.
Brown and his wife Jane will be moving to Salado later this summer. Brown will be heading an auto dealership in Temple after recently reuniting with business partner Garlyn Shelton.
Brown says the decision to vacate the seat on Thursday gives his successor an opportunity to accrue seniority when the next regular session starts in January 2013.
Brown served 12 1/2 years in the Texas House and before that was a member of the College Station City Council for 9 years.
From the Secretary of State’s office, the sequence of events to fill the vacancy begins when the Governor either accepts Brown’s resignation or it takes affect eight days after its received. The Governor has the authority to call a special election, which can be held on uniform election days. That means the earliest a special election can be held to fill the unexpired term is this November 8th.
