Former State Senator, Ambassador Dies

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Teel Bivins, a former state lawmaker and U.S. ambassador to Sweden, has died. He was 61.

Family spokeswoman Sharon Miner says Bivins died at his home in Amarillo on Monday afternoon. She said he had been battling a long illness.

The Amarillo Republican served in the Texas Senate for 15 years before President George W. Bush appointed Bivins to be the U.S. ambassador to Sweden in 2004. He stepped down for health reasons in early 2006.
