UT Exec: Med Schools Must Boost Output

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A health care executive says U.S. medical and nursing schools need to boost their output significantly because of a growing and aging population.

Arthur Garson Jr., senior vice president at the University of Texas Health Science Center, suggested Monday that the nation’s nursing schools should double the number of graduates over the next four years. He said U.S. medical schools need twice as many graduates over the next 14 years.

Garson took part in an Austin conference hosted by the University of Texas System.

The Austin American-Statesman reports Texas had 188 physicians per 100,000 residents in 1990. By last year that number grew to 200 doctors per 100,000 residents.

Garson suggested the U.S. will need up to 1 million more nurses and 150,000 additional doctors in the next 15 years.
