Bryan ISD Staff Propose Budget Cutting Ideas

The Bryan school board has been given three lists of budget cutting ideas, depending on how much less state money is appropriated.

Staff has recommended to the Board of Trustees a plan to cut at least $4 million dollars over the next two years, most of it occuring next year.

At the next level, not recommended at this time, would include rezoning middle and high schools, allowing Bryan High to be reclassified as 4-A for UIL purposes.

Athletic Director Harry Francis estimates minimum savings from shorter road trips between $50,000 and $100,000 dollars a year.

Bryan High would have to move at least 300 students to Rudder, requiring an expansion of the Rudder campus according to district spokeswoman Sandy Farris.

Under the most severe circumstances, reducing spending by another $3 million for a total of over $9 million dollars, the district would add layoffs and increase property taxes.
