Texas A&M Softball’s Kate Munnerlyn Tosses Perfect Game in Run-Rule Victory

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

Texas A&M’s Kate Munnerlyn tossed the program’s first perfect game in 21 years in an 8-0 run-rule victory over Kennesaw State on Friday night at Davis Diamond.

Munnerlyn faced the minimum 15 batters and struck out three. She threw 51 pitches, including 38 strikes, and opened 12 plate appearances with first-pitch strikes. Kennesaw State (4-11) threatened in the fifth inning when a leadoff liner headed toward the right-center gap, but Scout Lovell made a running catch to preserve the perfect game.

Texas A&M (12-7) scored three runs on two hits in the first inning, sending nine batters to the plate. The Aggies added five runs in the third to reach run-rule territory, highlighted by Mya Perez’s second home run in as many games to push the lead to 8-0.

Munnerlyn retired the side on five pitches in the fourth and closed the game with a pair of flyouts and a groundout to finish unblemished.

In the nightcap against Louisiana (13-6), Texas A&M fell 10-8 after committing three errors in the third inning that led to four unearned runs and a 5-0 deficit.

After Louisiana added two runs in the fifth, the Aggies answered with four runs in the bottom half. Frankie Vrazel doubled and Kennedy Powell singled before Perez walked to load the bases. Micaela Wark followed with a grand slam to trim the deficit to 7-4.

Louisiana added a run in the sixth before Texas A&M responded with two runs to pull within 8-6. The Ragin’ Cajuns extended the lead in the seventh, and Ariel Kowalewski homered with one out to bring the tying run to the on-deck circle before the game ended.

Sidne Peters (4-2) took the loss, allowing five runs, all unearned, in 2.2 innings of work.
