News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
The No. 16 Texas A&M men’s golf team climbed two spots on the leaderboard in Monday’s second round action at the Marquette Intercollegiate. The Aggies head to Tuesday’s final round tied for third place at 25-over 601 after two loops around Erin Hills.
The Maroon & White fired a 4-over 292 in Monday’s action to enter a tie with San Diego State for third place. Clemson leads the tournament at 19-over 595 followed by Oral Roberts at 23-over.
The Aggies have two players in the top 10 heading into the final round. Wheaton Ennis and Aaron Pounds are tied with three other golfers for fifth place at 3-over 147. They sit behind tournament co-leaders Rich Wills of Clemson and Parker Severs of Florida who are even 144.
Pounds was the Aggies’ top performer Monday, firing a 2-under 70 at the 7,551-yard course. The highlight of his round was an eagle on the par-5, 576-yard No. 7. On a challenging course in which no golfer is under par through two rounds, Pounds has been steady, ranking fourth in the field with 25 pars through 36 holes.
Ennis shot a 1-over 73 to remain in the hunt for medalist honors. His Monday circuit included four birdies. His standing has been buoyed by his performance on the par 4s where his 4.05 average ranks fifth in the field.
Kris Kuvaas also logged a 1-over 73 in Monday’s action. He had an up-and-down round with a team-best six birdies. His eight birdies for the tournament rank fourth in the field.
Alex Long contributed as a counting score for the second time as he plays in the starting five for the first time in his career. He logged a 4-over 76 Monday and his 9-over 153 has him in a tie for 28th place.
Final round action starts Tuesday at 9:50 a.m. for the Aggies. They are paired with Florida and Chattanooga for the last loop.
