TxDOT Announces Temporary Road Closure Tuesday Morning

The first ever renovation of a more than 40 year old College Station apartment complex for low income elderly residents is completed. The city council at their last meeting, closed out the construction contract for the 49 unit Oak Hill apartments on Anderson. Joshua Brooks at the city’s community services office said the final cost came in $393,000 dollars under the contracted amount because prices for materials fell from highs during the pandemic, when the contract was approved, and because some optional features were not included. The reduced cost gives College Station another $280,000 dollars in community block grant money and another $113,000 in federal housing loan money. That put the final contract price at $3,000,695.50. Before construction starts on another student apartment building in the Northgate district, the developer receives city council approval to acquire a five foot wide sidewalk easement along Church Avenue west of Boyett Street. Lucas Harper of the city’s planning and development office says the developer agreed to build a ten foot sidewalk that meets Northgate standards. The sidewalk is along Church Avenue west of Boyett Street. Brazos County commissioners approve spending $1.6 million dollars to fix the section of Leonard Road west of Highway 47 that runs parallel to Thompsons Creek. Purchasing agent Charles Wendt tells WTAW News that the pavement is being eroded by the creek, and the repairs will preserve the road and hold the remaining creek bank in place. Before the commission’s unanimous vote, Wendt joked with new commissioner and former local car dealer Fred Brown. When Brown mentioned the contract was awarded to a Huntsville company, Wendt told Brown in jest the contractor “bought a Mazda in Bryan, some years ago.” As the laughter subsided, Wendt told Brown “I’ve been waiting to use that, I’m not going to lie.” Then Brown thanked Wendt “for the Mazda thing”. Once the county gives a notice to proceed, construction will take 70 calendar days to complete. The commission approved a budget amendment to supply the funding for the project.
