News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M’s Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio and Vanessa Borovilos were named SEC Golfer of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the league announced Wednesday.
Fernández García-Poggio earned the first weekly honor of her career after earning her first collegiate victory at the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate Tuesday. The sophomore shot a 4-under 209 en route to the victory and is the No. 34 ranked golfer on the World Amateur Golf Ranking. She is the first Aggie to be named the league golfer of the week since Zoe Slaughter (2022-24) on March 1, 2023.
Borovilos fired a 2-under 211 at the Charles Schwab, securing her a spot as runner-up to Fernández García-Poggio. The outing was the best of her young career, and she became the first Texas A&M freshman to secure the honor in nearly five years.
The Aggies are ranked No. 17 in the country and came in second as a team at the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate. The tournament wrapped up their fall season and they return to the course Jan. 27 for the Match in the Desert to tee off the spring campaign.
The duo shared the recognition with Avery Weed (Golfer of the Week) from Mississippi State and Siuue Wu (Freshman of the Week) of Florida.
