A&M Football’s Elko Named Bear Bryant Coach of the Week

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

HOUSTON — Texas A&M head football coach Mike Elko was named the Bear Bryant Awards Coach of the Week Tuesday afternoon. Elko also earned Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week recognition earlier in the week.

Elko and the then-No. 14 Aggies rallied past No. 8 LSU, 38-23, on Saturday night at Kyle Field. Trailing 17-7 at the half, the Aggies scored 31 of their 38 points in the second half. Quarterback Marcel Reed gave the Aggies a spark coming in off the bench in the third quarter and scoring three unanswered rushing touchdowns, while running back Le’Veon Moss also registered his fourth multi-touchdown game of the season. The duo racked up a total of 145 yards on the ground and a combined five touchdowns overall in the win. On the opposite side of the ball, BJ Mayes had a career night by picking off two of A&M’s three interceptions, while the defense limited the Tigers to just 24 rushing yards on the night.

The Aggies boast a 7-1 record on the year, notching their best start to SEC play in program history, standing at 5-0, and their best start to conference play since going 7-0 in the Big 12 in 1998. With the win on Saturday, A&M has defeated two top-10 opponents at home for the first time since 1989 and is the only team this year to knock down multiple AP top-10 teams.
