News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed and Tyler White earned SEC weekly honors after helping lead the Aggies to a top-10 victory over LSU, 38-23. Reed was named SEC Freshman of the Week and White garnered SEC Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.
Reed provided a spark off the bench leading the Aggies to a second-half comeback by scoring three unanswered rushing touchdowns, before finishing the night with 62 yards on nine carries and completing both of his passes for 70 yards.
The freshman entered the game midway through the third and scored on an 8-yard run on the first play, before finding the end zone for the second time with one minute remaining in the quarter to give the Aggies their first lead. Reed extended the Texas A&M lead to two scores with his third rushing touchdown in the opening minute of the fourth. He rushed for multiple scores for the first time in his career and became the first Aggie quarterback to score three-or-more touchdowns in a game since Trevor Knight against Tennessee in 2016.
White boomed three punts 50-plus yards down the field, landing four of his five punts inside the 20. He finished the night with an average of 48.4 yards per boot, including a game-long 54 yards. The Tigers’ average starting field position following his five punts was their own 13-yard line.
The Southlake, Texas, native has averages 46.3 yards on 26 punts this season, including 17 landing inside the 20 and nine sent 50-plus yards.
The weekly recognition is Reed’s second this season, marking the first time an Aggie has garnered multiple SEC Freshman of the Week honors since Trayveon Williams in 2016. White is the first Aggie punter to earn SEC Special Teams Player of the Week three times in a season since Braden Mann in 2018.
