Texas A&M Cross Country Earns Top-10 Finishes

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M cross country team secured a pair of top-10 finishes, as the men placed third and the women ninth Friday morning at the Watts Cross Country Course.

The Aggies battled to claim a pair of top-10 finishes to conclude the 2024 regular season on their home course in front of 2,372 fans in attendance. The men secured another top-three team result with 153 points which was good for third, while the women placed ninth for their third top-10 result of the year with 294 points.

The men got the day started in the 8k after a competitive battle with Texas Tech and Boise State for the podium spots. A&M was led by Zack Munger for the fourth time this season, as the sophomore crossed the line 17th in 23:09.9. Jack Johnston was the second-finishing Aggie in 20th with a time of 23:13.1, he was followed by Aiden Gonzalez-Rodiles in 32nd (23.31.4), Gilbert Rono in 34th (23:33.3) and wrapping up the point scorers was Jonathan Chung in 56th (23:47.0) to ensure the team’s third-place finish.

“Our men set a great tone for the day,” distance coach Wendel McRaven said. “We’re coming off three great weeks of training and we’ve been improving every week, and we started seeing that today. Our strength is the spread between one to five and I’m really pleased overall with the men today.”

On the women’s side, the group logged a ninth-place result around the 6k course. Maddie Peters paced the group to rank 33rd in a time of 20:09.8. She was followed by Kennady Fontenot close behind in 41st (20:17.1), while Megan Roberts (72nd – 20:43.0), Emma Little (77th – 20:48.0) and Nicole Chastain (79th – 20:49.6) concluded the points scorers for the Maroon & White.

“The women came out aggressive and got in good position early,” McRaven continued. “We were missing a piece today which could have moved us up a couple of spots, but I told the girls last year at this point we were in a similar spot, but we kept getting a bit better every meet and qualified for nationals. We just need to focus on getting a little bit better.”
