News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
WACO – Two old Big 12 and SWC foes duke it out in the Battle of the Brazos Friday when the Texas A&M soccer team travels to play the Baylor Bears in an 8 p.m. match at Betty Lou Mays Field.
It marks the second consecutive season the teams have played following a nine-year hiatus in the series. Last year the teams played to a 1-1 draw at Ellis Field despite Texas A&M owning a 22-6 edge in shots.
The Aggies are coming off a 3-0 victory over Fairfield and enter the match with a 2-1-0 record. Sydney Becerra leads the squad with three goals. The Maroon & White have two shutouts on the season with freshmen goalkeepers Sydney Fuller and Maysen Veronda registering one apiece.
With his next victory, head coach G Guerrieri will tie former Florida skipper Becky Burleigh for fourth place on the all-time NCAA Division I list for coaching wins. He will also tie Burleigh for eighth place on the NCAA coaching wins list for all divisions. Guerrieri’s career mark stands at 512-175-51 (.726).
Texas A&M owns a 14-4-3 edge in the all-time series, but just a 4-3-1 advantage in Waco. The teams have met twice since the Aggies moved to the greener pastures of the SEC with both resulting in draws. The teams have not played in Waco since 2009, a 1-0 victory for the Maroon & White. Baylor’s last victory came in 2000, during a four-match win streak in the series with Texas A&M enjoying a 15-match unbeaten string since then at 12-0-3.
Baylor enters the fray with a 3-1-0 mark for its best start since the 2019 seasons. The Bears own a three-match win streak including a 5-2 victory over St. Bonaventure in Waco followed by 1-0 triumphs against Hawaii and Portland in Honolulu. Callie Conrad scored the lone goal in the Bears’ two victories at the Outrigger Kickoff. Ashley Merrill also has two goals for the Green & Gold. Azul Alvarez has started all four matches in goal, posting a 0.29 goals-against average in 315 minutes.
The Bears looking for their first four-match win streak since 2018, a season in which the Bears made a run to the Elite Eight.
The match is available on ESPN+ with Lincoln Rose (play-by-play) and Kit McConnico (color) on the broadcast. An Aggiecentric audio stream will be available in the 12th Man Mobile app with the voices of David Ellis and Thomas Dick painting the picture.
