News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
BIRMINGHAM – After striking out a career-high 12 batters in Texas A&M’s series clinching win over Mississippi State, left-hander Justin Lamkin has been named the SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday.
The weekly honor marks the first of Lamkin’s career and the first by an Aggie this season. The sophomore lefty shared the award with Arkansas’ Hagen Smith.
Lamkin allowed one run on two hits over a career-high 7.1 innings in the Maroon & White’s 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday. The sophomore carried a perfect game into the fifth and retired 21 of the first 22 batters he faced in his second win of the year. The lefty kept the Mississippi State lineup off balance all afternoon as seven of his career-best 12 strikeouts were looking.
With the performance, Lamkin improved to 2-0 on the year and lowered his ERA to 1.48. The sophomore’s ERA currently ranks third in the SEC and 17th nationally. Lamkin also dropped his WHIP to 0.82, which is good for fifth in the SEC and 18th nationally.
The sophomore and the Aggies return to action tomorrow night at 6 p.m. for a midweek contest against Houston Christian at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
