PECOS, Texas (AP) _ For the second day in a row, officers in SWAT gear entered the grounds of a remote West Texas prison that was heavily damaged by a weekend riot.
Officials say two buildings at the Reeves County Detention Center where just over 2,100 inmates live are uninhabitable following the Saturday riot.
A county official said about 600 inmates had been moved back into prison housing.
A sheriff’s deputy said the two buildings where the riot occurred were in lockdown last night.
A man who refused to identify himself ordered an Associated Press reporter to leave an area near the prison because of security concerns late Wednesday night.
The company that runs the facility, GEO Group Inc. of Boca Raton, Fla., said the prison is surrounded by a double fence with multiple rows of razor wire and an electronic alarm system. It said the fence is secure and was not damaged, and there have been no serious injuries to staff or inmates.
Pecos is about 175 miles east of El Paso.
