WACO, Texas (AP) _ Five Waco police officers have been fired and four others have left the department in the wake of a double-dipping scandal.
The nine were accused of taking payment for working as private security guards while also being on duty with the police department.
Waco Police Chief Brent Stroman said he has closed the department’s internal investigation, but a federal probe that could result in criminal charges remains unfinished.
The Waco Tribune-Herald reported that some officers apparently filled out timecards for their security jobs at the Waco Housing Authority and at the Police Department, showing they were in two places at once.
But John Cullar, an attorney for two officers, has called the allegations “ludicrous” and said any timecard irregularities were simply faulty bookkeeping.
