Former Congressman Goes to Trial in Gun Case

HOUSTON (AP) _ A former Houston congressman accused of firing a gun at two teens in a car is set to have his day in court.

Jury selection is expected to begin Monday in the trial of Craig Washington. He faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.

Police say Washington fired three bullets into a car on New Year’s Day 2008, after a confrontation outside his downtown law office with two teens in a vehicle.

Washington said he fired his weapon in self-defense after he feared the teens were going to run him over with their vehicle. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Washington represented Houston in Congress from 1989 to 1995.
