The College Station city council agrees to pursue an ordinance protecting trees in residential neighborhoods where redevelopment is taking place.
The proposal, from councilwoman Linda Harvell, included showing photos where trees were cleared from lots in established areas.
John Nichols asked if the protection would apply only when there is redevelopment in established subdivisions.
City manager Bryan Woods told the council this is a complex topic, and suggested getting input from homeowners and homebuilders.
Mayor Karl Mooney recalled the legislature not taking action in 2017 on a request to ban cities from protecting trees.
The city currently requires new homes to have one or two canopy trees.
