There was little discussion before the Texas Transportation Commission approved Brazos County’s request to create a regional mobility authority (RMA).
Commissioner Jeff Austin, who previously presided over a RMA based in Tyler, praised the county’s decision to pursue transportation projects with an organization that can compete with major cities like Dallas.
Also speaking were commission chairman Bruce Bugg Jr., TxDOT director of project planning and development Brian Barth, Brazos County judge Duane Peters, and county commissioner Nancy Berry.
Eight projects are proposed by the Brazos County RMA. At the top of the list, is a tunnel under University Drive between Texas and Wellborn. Barth mentioned a variety of potential funding partners for the tunnel that would move thru traffic under Texas A&M and the Northgate district. Barth also listed the local RMA supporters.
The governor will name a chairman of the new body. And county commissioners will appoint four members…who live in Brazos County but cannot be elected officials or work for a governmental agency located in the county.
