The chairman of the Texas A&M system’s board of regents spent one hour at this month’s meeting of the Texas A&M faculty senate.
Topics included the Texas Tech system’s efforts to open a veterinary school, which Schwartz said “it’s just lunatic.” Schwartz says instead of starting a vet school in hopes of keeping graduates, there needs to be an economic development campaign to attract large animal vets to the high plains and the panhandle. Schwartz says graduates will go to where the money is, just as he and his siblings did after graduating law school.
In advance of the upcoming legislative session, Schwartz told the faculty senate he hopes state lawmakers will take over the cost of providing veterans and their families Hazlewood education benefits, which would save the A&M system’s $50 million dollars.
And Schwartz doesn’t see lawmakers approving more tuition revenue bonds for state universities to finance the construction of buildings to start new programs. Two years ago, the A&M system received $800 million of TRB’s out of $2 billion approved by the legislature.
