One of three Kroger grocery stores in the twin cities is closing.
Kroger officials in Houston report a mid-August date is set to close the store and fuel center at Texas and Southwest Parkway.
All 70 employees been offered positions at other Kroger stores. That includes Bryan, another full service grocery in College Station on Longmire, and a recently opened convenience store at Rock Prairie and the freeway.
The statement from Kroger indicated the store…which opened in 1982…lost money despite attempts over several years to increase sales, profitablity, and store conditions.
It is the third grocery in Bryan/College Station to close this year, following Bryan’s Wal-Mart neighborhood market in January and Village Foods, also in Bryan, in February.
Statement from Kroger Stores Houston Division office:
The Kroger at Texas Avenue and the Southwest Parkway has served thousands of families since 1982.
Within the past several years, we attempted to increase sales, profitability and store conditions, but despite our best efforts, we were not successful.
We have made the very difficult decision to close the store and fuel center in mid-August.
We never want to close any store; however, to keep prices low for our customers across the area, we cannot continue to operate stores that lose money for sustained periods.
This store will continue to operate until its closing, with unique sales plans to sell down inventory and provide deeply discounted products to associates and customers.
There are approximately 70 associates and we are offering them all jobs at other nearby Kroger locations.
We invite customers to shop our two Kroger stores located less than five miles away at 3535 Longmire Drive @ Rock Prairie (in College Station) and at 2303 Boonville Rd @ N Earl Rudder Fwy (in Bryan).
Kroger appreciates the support of the College Station community.
