Texas A&M’s Bhosale Named SEC Tennis Player of the Week

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M’s Rutuja Bhosale (pronounced roo-too-jah bo-slay) has been named the SEC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Bhosale receives the honor for the first time this season and the second time in her career.

The junior from Pune, India, went undefeated in A&M’s only match last week, leading the Aggies to a 4-2 victory over No. 45 Baylor at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

Bhosale began by teaming with Anna Mamalat and winning four consecutive games to close out a 6-2 victory against Gabriela Ferriera and Rhiann Newborn at the No. 2 doubles line. With the win, the Aggie duo improved to a team-best 14-4 overall and extended its win streak to three.

In singles, Bhosale gave A&M a lead it would not lose, winning eight consecutive games in a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Kiah Generette at the No. 3 line to give the Aggies a 3-2 advantage. It marked the fourth consecutive victory for Bhosale, who is tied for the A&M lead in singles wins with a 6-2 record in dual matches only and a 12-6 record overall.

Bhosale and the Aggies open SEC play Thursday as 14th-ranked A&M faces No. 29 Auburn at 2 p.m. at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn, Alabama.
