200+ Houston Firefighters to Lose Jobs

HOUSTON (AP) _ A union official says more than 200 Houston firefighters will begin receiving layoff notices next week.

Jeff Caynon of the Houston Professional Firefighters Association told KTRK-TV that 238 firefighters received calls Thursday ordering them to attend meetings where they will receive 45-day layoff notices.

Union officials say they will continue trying to work something out between the city and firefighters.

The city is facing a budget shortfall, and layoffs have already occurred in other departments.

The city must give municipal employees 45 days’ notice of layoffs. A budget must be passed by June 30.
