The last time the A&M and Baylor women played each other in Dallas was a classic game of the Big 12 Tournament in 2006 that Baylor won 53-52. They could play another classic in Dallas but certainly not in the torn down Reunion Arena but rather the still newish American Airlines Arena. That would be on Tuesday night, but for sure both teams have other matter to consider and yesterday Gary Blair madder that clear when he open his press conference by playing “Georgia On My Mind”.
Yep first thing first and that the Georgia Lady Bulldogs Sunday afternoon at 3:30 in the Dallas Regional semi-finals of the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile Baylor meets Green Bay Sunday evening.
We will broadcast the Aggies vs Georgia Sunday starting at 3:15.
The second-seeded and seventh-ranked Texas A&M women’s basketball team (29-5) returns to the Sweet 16 for the third time in four years after cruising to first- and second-round victories over 15th-seeded McNeese State (87-47) on March 20 and seventh-seeded Rutgers (70-48) on March 22. A&M faces sixth-seeded Georgia (23-10) in the regional semifinals of the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship to be played on Sunday, March 27 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Tipoff between the Aggies and the Lady Bulldogs is set for 3:34 p.m. (CT) and is televised nationally in ESPN2. A&M has won eight of its last 10 games and is one of just two Sweet 16 teams, next to top-seeded Connecticut, to hold both of its NCAA Tournament opponents under 50 points. In addition, the Aggies outscored their competition by over an average of 30 points (31.0) and are one of just two teams, next to No. 1 seed Tennessee, to do so. The Aggies head to the Dallas Regional in search of their second trip in program history to the Elite Eight. The team is 1-2 all-time in Sweet 16 games.
AGGIES IN NCAA TOURNAMENT PLAY
The Aggies are 11-7 all-time in postseason play and are making their eighth all-time NCAA Tournament appearance (‘94, ‘96, ‘06, ‘07, ‘08, ‘09 ’10, ’11) and fourth in the Sweet 16 (’94, ’08, ’09, ’11). Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair has now led 17 of his all-time squads at Stephen F. Austin (6-6), Arkansas (8-5) and A&M (9-5) combined to the Big Dance with a 23-16 career record in NCAA Tournament games. He is one of only two Division I women’s basketball coaches next to C. Vivian Stringer (Cheyney State, Iowa and Rutgers) to take three teams to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Aggies are one of seven top seeds to advance to the regional semifinal as Louisville defeated Xavier for the only upset so far of a one or two seed. Historically, six No. 2 seeds have gone on to win a national championship title including Tennessee in 1987, Louisiana Tech in 1988, Texas Tech in 1993, Connecticut in 2004, Baylor in 2005 and Maryland in 2006.
