School may be over for most in the state of Texas, but the gyms in Aggieland will be packed with students this weekend for the annual Great American Shootout basketball tournament hosted by the Bryan-College Station Convention & Visitors Bureau (BCS CVB). The tournament–which is expected to draw close to 3,000 players, coaches, and spectators–is set to run Friday through Sunday.
“We love starting summer each year with this tournament,” said Kindra Fry, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the BCS CVB. “And there’s some really great talent that comes into Aggieland for this tourney. A good number of these players that we’ll see over the next three days will end up on NCAA teams in just a few years.”
The Great American Shootout (GAS) features 124 AAU boys’ basketball teams from across the state of Texas. AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) is one of the largest non-profit sports organizations in the United States, and has famous alumni such as Chis Paul, Lebron James, and Shaquille O’Neal among countless others who have later gone on to NBA careers.
The tournament–now in its 17th year–features teams from across the state of Texas, broken into four divisions with players ranging from 8th grade age all the way through high school seniors. Pool play begins on Friday starting at 6:30 pm at three Bryan-College Station high schools and five middle school gyms, while bracket play will begin on Saturday.
“Not only is this a great showcase of talent, but it’s also a great economic boost for B/CS during a historically slow time for businesses,” Fry said. “Most of our hotels are booked, and many of the teams and families book out large tables at restaurants, as well as check out some of our attractions too before they leave town. Our businesses love this tournament as much as we do.”
The general public is able to attend the event buy purchasing tickets at any of the host gym sites. Tickets are $20 for adult all-tournament passes, or $14 for students under 18 or seniors over 65. Individual day passes are also available for $10 for adults or $7 for students and seniors.
