“The Battle For Texas”, a state 7-on-7 high school football tournament set for next week at Veterans Park, has been canceled.
The event was supposed to replace the annual State 7-on-7 State Championship tournament, which was called off because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Organizers cited push-back from the State 7on7 Board as the reason for the cancellation.
In 2005, the Bryan city council diverted property tax revenue from the area around the main post office to pay for new infrastructure. The council during its April 9th meeting approved dissolving the tax increment reinvestment zone, or TIRZ. Strategic projects director Lindsey Guindi said more than $5.5 million dollars was collected by the TIRZ. The money went towards building Nash Street and new post office driveways, the roundabout at Nash and Broadmoor, improvements at Camelot Park, and other infrastructure. Guindi also said the assessed valuation of the property in the TIRZ grew from $2.2 million to more than $75 million dollars. With the end of TIRZ 19, Guindi says $400,000 dollars in annual property tax revenue will now go to the city of Bryan’s general fund and the city’s debt service fund. For the fourth time, Bryan Broadcasting’s Candy 95 wins a national award for community service. Candy 95 is one of ten radio stations receiving a National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Crystal Award. Bryan Broadcasting operations manager and Candy 95 afternoon host Rob Mack accepted the award Tuesday at the NAB’s Radio Show in Las Vegas. Candy 95 previously won the Crystal in 2012, 2016, and 2019 and has been a finalist a total of nine times. Also among this year’s 50 finalists was WTAW.
A Bryan police officer watching a man walk on the wrong side of the road led to finding out that the man was wanted on ten criminal warrants. That resulted in the arrest of 30 year old Randy Graves of Bryan. Since his arrest on April 9, online jail records show Graves was placed on community supervision on eight warrants from Bryan municipal court which involve variety of traffic charges. Graves was still jailed as of April 16 on warrants accusing him of family violence assault in March of 2023, causing a traffic accident in August of 2021, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana at the time of his latest arrest. Bonds in those cases totals $20,000 dollars. A College Station police officer learned that the man he saw not using a crosswalk while crossing Texas Avenue at night was wanted on criminal warrants in four cases. That led to the man going to the Brazos County jail for the 50th time in almost 34 years. Jail records show bonds previously posted by 53 year old Gilbert Ontiveros Vasquez were surrendered in pending trials on felony theft and misdemeanor criminal trespassing charges. He was placed on community supervision on a warrant from Bryan municipal court. And Vasquez faces a new charge of failing to identify himself. Vasquez, who was booked April 11th, remains held as of April 16th in lieu of bonds totaling $18,000 dollars.
